My time as President will be coming to an end this March. Looking back on the past two years, I have many regrets but also a great sense of pride in having been a part of the Korean Academy of Preventive Dentistry and Oral Health’s 60-year history. As it reaches this milestone and heads towards its 100th year, I ponder on what further efforts can we make together as an organization.

In today’s digital age, the term “network” is often used to refer to a communication or broadcasting system. However, it also denotes a kind of system in which organizations are closely connected, enabling them to handle any task or problem in an efficient and organized manner. In English, “network” is a compound of the nouns “net,” as in a fishing net, and “work.” The etymology, hence, refers to the act of weaving a net, and the word has been extensively applied to describe any arbitrary network.

The Academy has been steadily constructing networks through research topics and researchers, with each paper published in academic journals, conference hosted, and activity that promotes oral health. When making a sturdy net, one must not only consider how thick it will be, but also how densely it will be woven. Just as a thick and tightly knitted net brings in many fish, so will a solid network will allow the Academy to bear much fruit. This kind of network will allow us to achieve much, as well as serve as a strong foundation for our achievements.

I hope that the Academy, which has been in existence for over 60 years, will take the time to re-examine our networks, tighten any loose screws, and continue to build on the web of connections that will protect our history.

이제 학회장으로서의 임기가 3월로 만료된다. 지난 2년을 뒤돌아보면 아쉬움도 많지만 학회의 60년 역사와 함께 했다는 뿌듯함도 크다. 이제 60년을 지나 100년으로 가는 여정에서 학회는 어떤 노력이 필요한지 많은 생각을 해 본다.

정보화시대에 있어 네트워크는 통신이나 방송의 체계를 지칭하는데 많이 사용되는 용어이지만 어떠한 일이나 문제점을 처리하는 데 각 기관 따위가 긴밀하게 연결되어 조직적이고 효율적으로 움직일 수 있도록 만든 체계를 의미하기도 한다. 영어 network의 어원은 그물을 뜻하는 net와 일을 뜻하는 work의 합성어이다. 즉 그 어원은 그물을 짜는 행위를 가리키는 의미인데, 임의의 연결망을 지칭하는 용어로 그 범위가 확장된 단어이다.

학회는 학술지, 학술대회 등을 통한 연구논문의 발표를 통해 연구주제 간, 연구자 간에 네트워크를 긴밀히 구성해 간다. 또한 구강건강증진을 위한 활동을 통해 인적 네트워크도 구성해 간다. 견고한 그물을 만들고자 한다면 그물을 만들 때 망을 이루는 그물 하나하나의 굵기도 중요하지만 얼마나 촘촘히 엮어 가느냐도 매우 중요하다. 굵고 촘촘한 그물이 있다면 많은 고기를 수확할 수 있듯이 학회의 네트워크를 견고히 가져간다면 우리가 이루고자 하는 많은 성과물을 건져낼 수 있을 것이다. 견고한 네트워크는 수확이라는 측면에서 뿐만 아니라 우리가 가진 많은 성과물들을 든든하게 떠받쳐주는 역할도 한다.

이제 60년 역사를 넘어가는 학회는 우리가 가지고 있는 네트워크가 얼마나 굵고 촘촘한지 다시 점검해 보고 미래를 위해 보수할 부분이 있으면 과감하게 보수하고 우리 역사를 지켜낼 튼튼한 네트워크 만들어 갔으면 하는 바램이다.
