The Korean Academy of Preventive Dentistry and Oral Health was founded in 1961. Over the past 60 years, preventive dentistry, oral health, and various academic achievements have been submitted and published in the Journal of the Korean Oral Health Association, an affiliated journal. The initiation of these educational endeavors presents a significant opportunity for dentistry to establish itself in Korea and promote independent research conducted by dental colleges.

Noteworthy, until the 21st Century, our preventive dentistry had difficulties learning and realizing advanced countries’ research. Conducting research and presenting its findings was arduous, but it was a rewarding experience for me. Preventive dentistry research has developed rapidly since the 2000s, with numerous world-class research results getting published in our academic journals. Additionally, with the expansion of research in diverse areas, our field of preventive dentistry and public oral health science is showcasing its unique characteristics that can be integrated with multiple studies within the broader field of dentistry.

However, what is distressing is the uncertainty surrounding the utilization of these various studies for dental medicine and public oral health promotion. In this era, it is evident that certain unfounded or commercially biased information propagated by influential individuals on social media can be more alluring than research findings published in academic journals, which undergo rigorous scrutiny and screening processes. Specifically, the research findings published in academic journals are highly professional and detailed, making it understandably more challenging for non-medical individuals to comprehend and engage with them.

To overcome these challenges, we must focus on effectively publicizing the academic research achievements and facilitating their practical implementation. This responsibility lies with the researchers who publish in academic journals.

우리 대한예방치과∙구강보건학회는 1961년 창립되어 지난 60여년간 예방치과와 구강보건학, 그리고 이와 연관된 다양한 학문적 성과가 부속 학술지인 대한구강보건학회지에 투고 및 게재되었다. 이러한 학술 활동의 시작이 우리나라에서 치의학이 자리잡게 하였고, 치과대학을 기반으로 주체적인 연구가 시작된 중요한 계기가 되었다고 볼 수 있다.

사실 21세기에 들어서기 전까지는 우리의 예방치과학은 앞서 나간 국가의 연구를 배우고 실현해 보는 데에도 현실적으로 어려움이 있었다. 연구를 수행하고 연구 성과를 발표하는 것만으로도 벅찼고, 또 이것을 해냄으로써 보람을 얻을 수 있는 시기였다고 생각한다.

예방치과학 연구는 2000년대 이후 급격하게 발전하고 세계적인 연구 성과가 우리 학술지에도 많이 발표되었다. 또 다양한 영역으로 연구 분야가 확장되어 우리의 예방치과학과 공중구강보건학은 치의학 분야에서도 또 다양한 학문과 융합될 수 있는 특성을 십분 발휘하고 있다.

하지만 여기에서 고민되는 것은 이렇게 쏟아지는 다양한 연구가 치과 의료와 국민의 구강건강증진에 활용되느냐는 것이다. 지금 시대는 엄격한 심사를 거쳐 게재되는 학술지에 소개되는 연구 결과보다는 소셜미디어의 주요 인사가 소개하는, 일부는 근거가 없거나 혹은 상업적으로 편향된 지식이 더 유혹적인 것이 사실이다. 특히나 학술지에 게재되는 연구의 성과들이 매우 전문적이고 세부적이다 보니 비의료인에게는 더 접근하기 어려운 것이 사실이다.

이러한 맹점을 극복하기 위해 우리 학술지의 학문적 연구 성과를 쉽게, 널리 알릴 수 있는 방법을 고민할 필요가 있다. 그리고 연구 성과가 실제 활용될 수 있는 다양한 노력을 기울여야 할 것이다. 이것은 학술지를 발행하는 연구자의 의무이기도 하다.
