The 2023 General Academic Conference of the Korean Academy of Preventive Dentistry and Oral Health took place on October 28 at the Seoul National University Dental Hospital’s auditorium. Many members attended the conference, presenting an opportunity to reconnect with familiar faces. As a former society president, attending this year’s general academic conference carried special significance for me. Preparing meticulously, I even got a haircut the day before and paid careful attention to my attire-aware that this might be my last conference as an active member. Approaching retirement age in February of the following year, my role would shift to a regular member with fewer obligations to attend. Therefore, I had quite different sentiments about this year’s general academic conference.

While listening to theme and series presentations at the general academic conference, I reflected on my academic journey from my 20s to 40s, and contemplated my executive role post-50s. I recollected the constant “challenges” within the academic society and my involvement in the “quarrels” between senior members of the society.

Whether I aligned rightly or wrongly, I found myself nominated as the society president, and consequently tried to implement some changes during my tenure. Unfortunately, I did not receive “financial backing” from seniors and corporate sponsors who doubted my competence. Struggling as a financially constrained president, my capabilities were hindered. I could remember not having enough funds to publish the society journal, a pivotal aspect of running an academic society. I also recollected engaging in arguments with the department that managed funds over setting up a website of our academic society.

Since my term as president, it appears that the society has not faced financial difficulties, at least during the tenure of junior presidents. I believe the junior executive team demonstrated excellent flexibility in managing the society, including the publication of the journal. I humbly acknowledge the “virtue” and “ability” showcased by the junior academic presidents, surpassing my own shortcomings in this regard.

As the last academic journal of 2023 is being published, I find myself expressing gratitude and encouragement but also apologizing for only complaining about myself. A piece of advice to academic members is to approach our thinking on the X, Y, and Z axes. Considering our current values as (X1, Y1, Z1), a shift to (X2, Y2, Z2) could be an opportunity for the advancement of our academic society. I am offering this advice because I believe our existing standards of judgment may become skewed with changing times. Please think deeply about this advice before making decisions.

Lastly, I would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank you for your hard work” message to the dedicated members of our Academic Society who have contributed to research, lectures, presentations, and dental care services over the past year. As a senior academic president, I would like to express my gratitude to the authors who submitted valuable manuscripts to this journal and to the executives who diligently worked on editing and publishing.

2023년도 대한예방치과∙구강보건학회 종합학술대회가 10월 28일 서울대치과병원 강당에서 개최되었습니다. 많은 회원들이 참석하였고, 반가운 얼굴들을 만날 수 있는 계기가 되었던 것 같습니다. 학회 전임회장인 제가 금년도 종합학술대회를 신경 쓰고 - 전날 이발도 하고, 당일날 넥타이와 구두도 신경 썼습니다. - 참석한 것은 공식적으로 전임 학회 임원으로 참석하는 것이 금년이 마지막일 것이라 생각했기 때문입니다. 내년 2월이면 저도 정년을 맞이하게 되고, 그 이후로는 정회원이지만 참석 의무가 덜해지는 회원 자격이 될 것 같아 금년 종합학술대회를 맞이하는 감회는 사뭇 달랐던 것 같았습니다.

종합학술대회의 주제 발표나 연제 발표를 들으면서, 과거 저의 20대부터 40대까지의 학회 활동이 생각나기도 하고, 50대 이후의 임원 활동도 생각해 보는 계기가 되기도 했습니다. 항상 학회는 ‘어려운(?)’ 일들이 많았던 것 같고, 학회 선배분들의 ‘다툼’ 속에서 어느 한 편에 줄을 서야 했던 기억도 납니다. 줄을 잘 선 덕인지 잘못 선 탓인지 어찌어찌해서 학회장 지명을 받기도 해서, 학회장을 하면서 많은 것을 바꾸고자 했지만, 공교롭게도 저의 무능력을 미리 확신하셨던(?) 선배님들이나 후원 기업체 등으로부터 ‘재정적 지원’을 받지 못한 회장이었기에, 할 수 있는 일은 제한적이었다고 회고가 됩니다. 학회 운영에서 가장 중요한 ‘학회지’를 발간할 비용이 부족하거나 홈페이지를 개설하기 위한 비용이 부족했던 기억도 나고, 이러한 일들로 기금을 관리하던 부서와 논쟁을 벌였던 기억도 납니다.

제가 회장직을 마친 후부터 후배학회장들이 운영하는 현재까지는, 최소한 재정적 어려움은 없었을 것이라 보여지고, 학회지 발간 등의 학회 운영에도 후배 집행진이 융통성을 훌륭하게 발휘하고 있다고 생각됩니다. 여러모로 ‘덕’과 ‘능력’이 부족했던 저보다는 후배 학회장들의 ‘후덕’이 돋보이는 부분이라고 인정하지 않을 수 없는 대목입니다.

2023년도의 마지막 학회지를 내는 시기에 제가 축하의 글을 쓰고 격려를 해 드려야 하는데, 제 푸념만 늘어놓은 듯해서 죄송합니다. 학회원들에게 드리는 당부의 말이라면, 우리의 사고의 틀을 X, Y, Z축으로 놓고, 현재의 우리의 가치관을 (X1, Y1, Z1)이라고 가정하고, 시대의 변화에 따라 우리의 가치관을 (X2, Y2, Z2)로 옮겨 보는 것도 학회의 발전 계기가 될 수도 있다는 생각을 해 보았다는 겁니다. 우리가 가진 기존의 판단 기준이 시대가 변하면서 기울어진 운동장이 될 수도 있지 않을까 하는 생각에서 드리는 조언이니, 한번 깊이 생각해 보시고 판단해 주시기 바랍니다.

끝으로 금년 1년 동안 연구와 강의, 발표, 진료 봉사에 애쓰신 학회원 여러분들에게 ‘금년 한 해 동안 수고하셨습니다.’라는 인사말을 전합니다. 아울러, 본 학회지에 귀한 원고를 보내 주신 저자 여러분들과, 편집과 발간에 애쓰신 관련 임원분들의 노고에 선배 학회장의 한 사람의 자격으로 정말로 수고하셨다는 인사를 전해 드립니다.
